Donna Ida Pebble Beach jeans

You know when you have nothing in the social calendar for months, then everything happens at the same time? Well, yeah that’s been happening to me lately. A four year old’s birthday and the obligatory party, a night away sans the children, trip to London and girlie spa time with cocktails.  But I’m not complaining, it’s all fun and I’m making the most of it now as the rest of the calendar is looking pretty sparse.

It has also meant that I’ve got to peruse the lesser explored corners of my wardrobe and dig out some of my “going out” clothes.  After a little trying on session for last weekend’s cocktails with the girls I settle on this.

For me the jeans are the highlight of this outfit. They’re the gorgeous Mabel jeans in Pebble Beach by I am the Ida Girl, courtesy of Donna Ida Denim. (I am totally obsessed with all things Ida so to have these jeans is up there with one of the highlights of my blogging journey so far).

What do you think?

My first option for Christmas day seemed to be quite popular (see it here). But since then, every time I open my wardrobe I hear a little squeak from my tartan skirt, as if to say “what about me?”. Last year I bought this skirt from Jack Wills as a last minute dash for traditional festive style. To be honest, it’s not something that I would wear at any other time of the year (mainly because it’s really short!) but to get into the spirit of the season I was compelled to buy it. There is definitely something to be said for forgetting fashion and just getting into the Christmas spirit.  Jack Wills don’t seem to do anything similar this year but how about these for a traditional tartan Christmas Day outfit…

Get Elle’s School Run Style…

I’ve seen photos of Elle McPherson on her school run time after time. Each time, her style can look unachievable. She’s tall and she’s glamorous (this helps!) but a slick school run style is do-able. Her look usually includes some simple, staple elements that she has put together really well. Here is my take on how to get the Elle McPherson school run style.

An Investment…

I have to admit, I live in jeans. Since giving up my career to have my children and live a life of domestic bliss (*coughs*), jeans have been my most reliable wardrobe friend. Never has an item been so important. They see my through the school run, walks in the woods, dinner out and most formal occasions too. (Featured in the Perfect ‘Going Out’ top post). But is there such a thing as the perfect pair?

I believe they deserve investment and a lot of love and care once you have them. Since discovering luxury American denim I have never gone back. You can usually get them one size smaller because they are so soft with that perfect amount of stretch, giving a really flattering fit. Jennifer Aniston pulls off a great pair of jeans, always in my opinion, managing to make them look smart.

If they really are an important part of your wardrobe I would invest as much as you can afford into a really great pair of jeans. There are lots of other things to think about too, such as pocket size and position and washes and waist height but that’s for another day.

Paige and brogues

My favourite brands are jbrand, 7 for all Mankind, Paige and Goldsign. Of all the styles, jeggings are at the core of my collection (which is not that vast – quality not quantity!). They’re the perfect jean for this season to wear with boots. They are also super, super comfortable…am I allowed to say that?!

My Collection…
  • One ‘everyday’ pair – casual & comfortable.
  • One ‘distressed’ pair – contrast with floaty silk tops or cashmere. Great for evenings.
  • One ‘cropped’ pair – elegant, timeless and perfect with pumps for smart/casual.
  • One ‘coloured’ pair – mix it up, why not?!

Pile of jeans

Taking a trip to a denim boutique will take the stress out of endless hours of trying on. The staff are dedicated to denim so will be able to find you your perfect pair. My favourite boutiques are Mimi Noor, Trilogy and Donna Ida.

Have you found the perfect pair?

It is a certain somebody’s (mine – just in case you hadn’t guessed!) birthday this weekend and I am going OUT! Yes, really OUT. Friends, dinner, cocktails…I haven’t been out for a while so I am super excited. With the planning taken care of, the inevitable question of “What will I wear???” soon rears it’s ugly head.

As I stare at my ‘going out’ clothes hoping something will just spring into my arms, I realise I am rather lacking in this department (I can sense JT shaking his head in despair as I write this!). I have some great staples – jeans and shoes. But I needed a top.

Cue the peplum top from F&F at Tesco.

After the success of the orange dress, I ordered this top online from F&F. When it arrived I was yet again astounded by the quality and fit. This is my first trip down the peplum top route, but I think I have been missing out. Love it. So flattering and I love the leather trim detail bringing a little bit of AW13. The best bit – it was £20.

I’ve teamed it with my favourite Paige Denim ripped jeans, Jimmy Choo heels and Anya Hindmarch clutch.

It’s perfect for dinner with friends, parties or a special date. You can buy this top online. It is also available in dark red and also in camel.

What will you be wearing on your next night out?

In the current edition of Red Magazine, I read about Bea Johnson and her Zero Waste Life. It was so enlightening and just reading it gave me a sense of calm and tranquility. She owns just five items of clothing and five items of footwear. Perhaps she is at one end of the scale but it inspired me strip back my wardrobe and think about what my bare minimums would be (well, for the summer anyway!).

Over the past few years I have taken on a new philosophy when it comes to clothes. Buy fewer. Buy better. I can be quite ruthless when it comes to clear outs too, I will periodically go through my wardrobe and de-clutter. It’s a really refreshing thing to do. Reminds me what I have and makes shopping a lot more focussed.

This is my conclusion…

[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_3533.jpg” href=””][/frame_center]

1. Tailored shorts in a neutral shade. Easily worn with brights or white for a clean look. (French Connection)
2. Silk cami. I’ve gone for a bright shade here but navy would also be good for versatility. (French Connection)
3. Tan leather sandals. I bought these because they quite literally go with anything. I can dress them up or just throw them on with shorts. (Sam Edelman)
4. Scarf. I chose leopard because it’s great for lifting a plain outfit and looks lovely with brights and neutrals. (Warehouse)
[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_3537.jpg” href=””][/frame_center]

5. Floral dress. (Emily & Fin)
[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_3534.jpg” href=””][/frame_center]

6. Wedges and clutch. MUST have wedges. Summer must-have, wedges are so easy to wear and versatile. (Stuart Weitzman, Russell & Bromley). Anya Hindmarch clutch that, with no exaggeration, goes with EVERYTHING!

[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_3538.jpg” href=””][/frame_center]
7. Cropped jeans and pumps. This is my staple outfit for cooler days and a typical ‘school-run’ style. I think cropped jeans at the ankle are really flattering and I find I can throw on a t-shirt, cami or shirt and they always look great (Koral, from Mimi Noor). My well-loved and well-worn Superga pumps in white add a touch of preppy style.
So that’s me. What items could you strip back to?

Embracing my new style rules, I was going to venture out of my navy and greige comfort zone and take on ‘summer brights’. As I live in skinny jeans, it seemed only right that I should start there.

[quote]”Buy the best you can afford and you’ll only buy once“[/quote]

My philosophy with jeans is, “Buy the best you can afford and you’ll only buy once“. I’m a big believer in having fewer, good quality items that wear and wash well that you will value more. So, with trepidation, I go forth on the hunt for my bright jeans. I head straight to Mimi Noor, my favourite denim boutique in Bath (yes I travel that far!) and dive on in….

Immediately, I am united with the jbrand 811, mid-rise skinny in Kumquat. A soft, coral colour that I knew would work well with neutrals and block colours. Sold.

[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_2872.jpg” href=””]Floral pumps: French Sole by Jane Winkworth[/frame_center]I wear them at every opportunity, they’re great dressed up for a summer party or with my beloved navy and pumps for everyday casual.[frame_center src=”http://www.mypollyanna.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/IMG_2866.jpg” href=””]Bag: Anya Hindmarch. Probably the most universal bag I own. Goes with everything! Shoes: Jimmy Choo. Classic neutral wedge bought on sale 3 years ago. These come out time after time due to their versatility. I’d always rather have one ‘special’ pair that I treasure.[/frame_center]

I didn’t think I could do it, but I’ve proved myself wrong and they seem to have created somewhat (or should I say kumquat??! – sorry that’s terrible!) of an addiction to brights. So have the confidence and just GO BRIGHT!
